A Novella and a New Experience

Earlier this year, I wrote a longer novella (45k or so). I adore the story and I'd love to see it find a home and give other people the chance to enjoy it as well.

But it's having a hard time finding a home. Because of length and genre, there aren't a lot of publisher venues for it. But I still believe in this story. I think it's a good one.

So I've decided I'm going to self-publish. This is something I've wanted to do for a while now anyway, to see how to works, to experience it for myself, to learn how it all works. All that great stuff.

I guess I don't have a lot more to say besides that. I will as I move forward with the project. I'll have to go through another round or two of edits, and get a cover worked up, and dig into all the details about digital formatting (which I've actually done before and am not too worried about), and look into promotion, distribution, all that fantastic stuff.

For those of you who have done this before, or are in the process, any suggestions on where I should further my self-publishing education?

A blog I used to follow (The Hack Novelist) detailed his journey to self-publish his debut novel. His website used to have some good resources, but I haven't visited in a while, so I'm not sure if they're still up.

You may want to check out both Whiskey Creek Press and Black Opal Books. Both publish shorter length works - Black Opal has my short novel right now for consideration.

Good luck!

I want to buy it!!!!!!

My only suggestion? Get a really good cover. I found the internal formatting easy, but I still regret my cover.

How exciting! You'll have to let me know how it all goes. I've been vaguely thinking about self-pubbing one of mine too....

I hope it ends up being a smooth process for you. Though I do agree with Breanna about getting a really good cover. Other wise, I'm no help at all, but think it will be a big win.

I'm using Scarlett Rugers for my cover and Aeroplane Media for my editing. Happy with both so far. Worth the money.

Self publishing interests me, so I'd love to hear how it goes with your novella. My next project might go that route.

I found you through GUTGAA

Good for you! How exciting! I want to head in the same direction but feel I need to get it professionally copy edited...and how the heck can I afford that??? (I can't, that's how.) I agree with the idea that the right cover art's important.

Bravo! Good for you. I'm definitely one of those people who'd like to enjoy it as well :D I'm interested to follow along with how it goes. I think self-pubbing for things like novellas sounds like a great way to learn more about it without committing a full-length novel. Good luck!

Dean Wesley Smith and Kris Rusch. David Gaughran and Joe Konrath. Or you can just ask me! :)
For covers, I recommend DeviantART - some artists are cheap. Or if you want a photo, I can give you links of free pics. Or you can go on fiverr and have one done for five bucks.
Looking forward to seeing you on Smashwords, Kindle, B&N and wherever else you'll choose to be!
Best
